Krishna Janmashtami also called Gokulashtami celebrates the birth of one of the most revered Gods of the Hindu religion - Lord Krishna, an avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu.

Janmashtami celebrations take place at midnight since Lord Krishna was said to be born then. The idol of Lord Krishna is bathed, adorned in new clothes and jewellery, placed in a cradle and worshiped. Sri Krishna's favorite foods like Makhan Mishri (a butter based Indian sweet dish) and other milk based delicacies are made on this day and are given as offerings. Later during the day, children's footprints are drawn outside the house with rice-flour paste symbolizing the entry of the infant Krishna into their homes.

During Janmashtami, Raslila (Indian group dance) is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Lord Krishna and commemorate his love for Radha. This dance is one of the most significant parts of the celebrations, as a decisive part of Lord Krishna's life was spent amidst the Gopis in Vrindavan.
